Careers and Opportunities

The Stanford Digital Economy Lab is an interdisciplinary group of passionate researchers brought together to study how digital technologies are transforming work, organizations, and the economy. Our insights are helping companies, policymakers, students, and professionals rise to the challenges and opportunities created by digitization.

We enjoy meeting those who share our belief in the power of human work and that augmenting human capabilities with machine capabilities will lead to the most profitable gains for everyone.

The Lab is part of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) and is co-sponsored by the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research (SIEPR).

AI at Work seeks research proposals

In 2026, AI at Work will support early career economists and other quantitative social scientists, including graduate students, with up to $200,000 to conduct and analyze field experiments and quasi-experiments exploring the effects of AI tools on the workplace.

This year, the program has two funding priorities:

  1. The Impact of AI on Worker Displacement and Adjustment
  2. The Impact of AI on Scientific Productivity

Expressions of interest are due April 10. Full info available at the link below.

Getting to work with these insanely smart, funny, ambitious people is intoxicating. We feed off of each others’ energy. Everyone here is learning, helping others out, and trying new things. What could be better?

Student Opportunities

The Lab is committed to supporting student learning and engagement in research, and we offer a small number of opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students, primarily for current Stanford students. As a small research lab, our student involvement is shaped by active project needs rather than large, structured programs. Research assistant positions open periodically throughout the year and will be posted on our Opportunities page when available.

Looking ahead, we are working toward developing a visiting student program for advanced PhD students (typically third- and fourth-year) from other universities. This program is currently in development, and details will be shared as they become available.

While we accept visiting students from other universities on occasion, capacity is limited. Those interested in visiting the Lab should keep an eye out for applications on our Opportunities page.

High School Students

While we are not able to hire high school students directly, we warmly encourage high school students interested in AI research to explore Stanford AI4ALL, a program hosted by the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI) and Stanford Pre-Collegiate Studies. AI4ALL offers students the chance to learn alongside peers from around the world and to explore how AI tools can be used for positive social impact.
