A common characteristic of big digital platforms is that they have been very active in the acquisition of smaller firms and start-ups. In theory, on the one hand, such acquisitions may generate significant value (through economies of scale, scope and network effects) and promote investments. On the other hand, such acquisitions may limit competition in a way that traditional antitrust tools cannot capture and therefore discourage innovation. In this project, we aim at evaluating the impact of hi-tech mergers and their effects on consumers as well as on online competition.
