Tomás Aguirre

Tomás Aguirre is an economics researcher focused on the labor market effects of AI and AI governance. He is a Research Scholar at the Centre for the Governance of AI (GovAI), an Oxford-spinout nonprofit, , where he conducts research on the economics of frontier AI — particularly how AI’s labor market impact can be measured. He is also a Research Affiliate at the Stanford Digital Economy Lab, collaborating with Stanford researchers on work related to the measurement and economics of AI. He has conducted economic research on artificial intelligence for approximately four years, focusing on AI labor markets, economic measurement, and AI governance.

He brings applied experience building and deploying machine learning systems — first as an intern at Latin America’s largest quantitative hedge fund (Giant Steps Capital) and later at an early-stage startup (Palver). He graduated top of his class in Economics at the University of São Paulo, served at the Executive Board of the International Economics Olympiad, and his research has been featured in The Washington Post, The Economist, and the Financial Times, among other outlets.
